5G in Canada

Not all parts of 5G have been deployed in Canada, at this time the Canadian government has no plans to make all of it available for cell phones.

Everyone on earth, including plants, animals, insects and humans are affected by electromagnetic radiation, but according to mainstream thinking, only those with very obvious symptoms are considered to be at risk. Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS) is very real.

I have been seriously injured by electromagnetic radiation. Long before the introduction of 5G, I was well aware of the harms caused by radiation. The introduction of all cellular network including 5g is cause for even greater concern. If the higher frequencies of 5G are introduced in Canada the additional frequencies and intensities of radiation will make things more difficult for those with EHS and likely increase the percentage of people who have EHS symptoms.

What is included in 5G or the fifth-generation technology standard for cell phones? The answer varies from country to country and even within a country. In Canada, only some parts of 5G are in use. Depending on the carrier, the mid and low bands used for 5G range from 0.6 GHz to 3.5GHz. These frequencies cover a greater range than previously used for 4G and previous cell phone generations of wifi.

The lower frequencies penetrate solid objects better ( i.e. concrete) and travel further, but carry less data . If these frequencies can penetrate concrete, imagine what they can do to the human body. The higher frequencies do not penetrate as well, nor travel as far, but they do carry more data with less latency (delay). The high band or millimetre waves (mmwave) are not being used by cell phone service providers in Canada apart from a few test areas.

Industry, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) has had plans to auction these frequencies, while Canadian companies have informed ISED multiple times that they don’t want mmwaves, that their implementation and use will be too expensive and that they are not needed.

There may be mid and low band 5G frequencies being radiated from the ubiquitous cell towers around us, but most are radiating 4G and 3G (radiation). At this time (and for the foreseeable future) mmwaves are not being used in Canada by cell phone providers,while other aspects of 5G have been implemented. Some experts refer to what has been implemented here as 5G Lite. 5G lite still represents a major change from previous generations.

Looking at the 5G technical problems, I feel that unless the cell phone companies figure out how to defy science, there is little chance mmwaves will be economically viable outside of dense urban cores.

The significant changes of 5G mmwave technology compared to 4G and earlier are:

1. Beam forming: the ability to focus the radiation into a narrow beam and aim it at the receiver. Most wifi routers used today do this as well. The beam can be between 120 degrees and 30 degrees. A cell phone or similar device does not form a beam, as small cells and tower transmitters do. The effect of this is a more concentrate beam focused at different receivers in succession is possible

2. Multiple input and output (MIMO). Previous generations were transmitted on a single frequency. MIMO is the biggest reason why 5G uses more battery energy and the base transmitters use significantly more electricity than previous generations. Powering three or more transmitters and receivers requires a lot of energy.

3. Mid and low band spectrum has been “frequency infilled,” meaning frequencies not previously used are now used. This causes densification, and the overall intensity increases.

If the mmwaves frequencies of 5G are used it is difficult to know how much worse it will make radio frequency sickness. I suspect the use of mmwaves will cause (many) skin irritation and neurasthenia. Neurasthenia is characterized by World Health Organization’s (International Classification of Disease) ICD-10, as:

  • Persistent and distressing complaints of increased fatigue after mental effort

  • Persistent and distressing complaints of bodily weakness and exhaustion after minimal effort is a condition characterised by physical and mental exhaustion, headaches and irritability

It was initially conceptualized as a “functional impairment of nerve sense and motor power, associated with symptoms akin to nervous shock”. The UN recognizes it as a form of disability, an environmental sensitivity. There is an appreciable body of scientific evidence that supports the problems will get worse. The military uses mmwaves for Active Denial Weapons (ADW) : frequencies intended to heat the skin. ADW is deemed non lethal which actually means one will live long enough to flee the area ,but does not recognise that it may cause cancers and other ailments in the future.

In the following formula, frequencies and wavelengths can be used interchangeably.

λ (Lambda) = Wavelength in meters C or Velocity of Light = Speed of Light (299,792,458 m/s) F =Frequency in Hz.

Mmwave frequencies are between 29.8 GHz and 298 GHz.

One of the reasons for the small cells that seem to be popping up on telephone poles and elsewhere is to provide infrastructure for mmwaves when they are included in the future. These cells come at a significant cost - the cells not only need to be installed and maintained but also need to be powered. They are installed close together to mitigate the role of atmospheric conditions and foliage which can block the waves.

Also more small cells with beam forming will allow more connections in the cellular network area. One of the major reasons for a dropped call is not so much a weak signal but interference from another signal.

In the future there are plans for more generations of cell phones. The standards for the next generation have not had their first draft and the 7G will not be developed until 6G is in use.

The previous generations of cell phones triggers many people’s EHS. It is estimated that at least 30% of Canadians exhibit EHS symptoms, and the number is expected to rise. Some estimates put the number at 74% or higher. People with EHS cannot use cell phones. Beam forming, MIMO and frequency infilling will increase the intensities of radiation and make life more stressful for those with EHS.
