Canada's Guaranteed Basic Income Act

Senate Bill S- 233

Coffee, Other News and More.

Wednesday, October 25th, 2023.

Today I was in the midst of preparing another video about the Westminster Declaration.

No, not a declaration out of history.

Was signed October 18th, When 138 different mostly world names in ranging from John Cleese to Julian Assange signed a document call for the governments of the world pleading for less online censorship. And they're particularly concerned about the corporations and how the big companies like YouTube, etc. are censoring so much of what is going on.

I got sidetracked a little bit doing that video and ended up delving into more on Canada's Basic Income Act and Senate Bill S-233.

When you dig through the act, I don't know if it actually be passed in this Parliament there's a good chance there'll be an election call before they can get it all the way through but it gives you an idea of where they're looking at and it's the second act on this one of the previous Parliaments the House of Commons introduced the bill this one was introduced by the Senate, they're both virtually word for word the same.

Looking at the Government of Canada web site showing the status of bills going through the Senate and the House of Commons is interesting.

That's where I spotted they're bringing in an act about guaranteed basic income.

I went into the site via their legisinfo page, the link is on the screen here.

You can fine-tune it, previous parliaments, etc.

Some of them, are basic housekeeping ones, and for those that aren't familiar with the parliamentary system in Canada, both the Senate and the House of Commons can introduce bills, but they have to pass both houses and go through third reading before they can receive royal assent.

The short title of one act is “Protecting young persons from exposure to pornographic act”.

Well, that's basically, shall we say, online porn, etc, etc. And I strongly encourage every one to contact their local MP and instruct them to grt on with it and pass the act, contacting ones senators for the province will help too.

If the act is implemented properly, it should be quite good.

Whether it will make it through the House before the next election is called is hard to say.

It could be a good way to bring it in, pretend they're concerned about this, call an election, and then the other parties will all say, oh, it was a desperately whatever party that caused the election, and that's why we haven't got this act. But, if they wanted to, they could have it passed within a couple of days.

And frankly, I don't think there's very many very debatable points in it.

Looking close at the stage bill is at you see the progress, it's gone through the Senate, and it's first reading in the House of Commons.

And if you want the text of the bill, you can follow it on this page too.

This is what I guess we could call a serious and important act, a serious act I think we can all be in favour or support of at least the principles of the act.

But one, well, you have to shake your head and that's S 214, an act to establish International Mother's Language Day. It has received royal assent. In case you're wondering, International Mother's Language Day is February 21st. I'm curious why they felt the need to pass that act and just what the real purpose of the act is. It is a bit of a head scratcher.

But coming down to the subject for today, is this Bill 233.

As I recall, in the last Parliament, the House of Commons had a C, whatever number it was at that time, basically almost word for word the same as this National Framework for Guaranteed Livable Basic Income Act.

Before anyone gets too excited, this is, shall we say, only stage one of the Basic Income Act.

Currently, it's in the second reading stage, it hasn't made it back into the house for the third reading.

It's still current, whether it dies on the order paper, or not when the next election is called and that's all well, who knows.

Looking at the text of the bill here it's quite a short bill. This is not giving a guaranteed annual income to people it's the first steps of it I guess you could say.

They do note that what it must include, in principle, and if you advertise the idea of a guaranteed annual livable income, that makes a lot of sense, and could save the government money they just have sort of one pocket to pull it out of, your pocket but and for some people that will be quite good but I think we all know that inflation will get the better of it that the people at the top will still find a way to grab all the money and the people that's intended to help probably won't receive help and ultimately it will turn into just another way to funnel money to the people at the top. I also feel it will become an early phase of the implementation of a Bank of Canada Central Bank Digital currency and a way to extend control and manipulation of people even more

Yes, there will be a few on the guaranteed income that find that it's an easy way to live and work.

But for the most part, I don't think that's what will happen.

But I'm just not convinced it's going to provide any great benefits to the people. It's intended to help.

Looking at the progress there, I think there's a very good chance it'll die on the order paper before the next election is called.
